Introduction

This course is intended to provide participants with modern environmental management practices, with particular emphasis on waste management.

The course contributes to understanding of the implementation of an environmental management system and explain how to manage the environmental aspects of a business and compliance with environmental law. Additional sessions are devoted specifically to waste management, including reference to best practice on recovery and recycling, and to environmental audits.

Each attendee will increase his/her knowledge of environmental management system specifically, and waste management in general.

Day 3: Environmental Aspects of a Business

An introduction to the topic of environmental aspects, including reference to:

    • Releases to air, land and water
    • Waste handling and disposal
    • Energy usage
    • Water supply and waste water treatment
    • Road transports
    • Biodiversity
    • Identifying environmental aspects and impacts

Day 4: Introduction to Waste Management

  • A review of current waste management practices
  • The concept of ‘duty of care’ for waste disposal
  • Classification of wastes
  • Special wastes
  • Waste management hierarchy
  • Waste disposal options

Day 5: Packaging & Waste Management

An explanation of the role of packaging in modern society and the problems of packaging waste disposal

    • Packaging materials, designs and essential requirements
    • Environmental aspects of packaging
    • Legislation affecting packaging
    • Management strategy for packaging
    • Case study and practical exercises on packaging material recycling
    • The environment and waste management
