Introduction

This course is intended to provide participants with modern environmental management practices, with particular emphasis on waste management.

The course contributes to understanding of the implementation of an environmental management system and explain how to manage the environmental aspects of a business and compliance with environmental law. Additional sessions are devoted specifically to waste management, including reference to best practice on recovery and recycling, and to environmental audits.

Training Methodology

The course will encourage discussion and all the participants will be encouraged to contribute. The classroom atmosphere will be conductive to asking questions. The ideas and information discussed during the course will follow the principle of deductive reasoning. Each attendee will increase his/her knowledge of environmental management system specifically, and waste management in general.

An introduction to the topic of environmental aspects, including reference to:

  • Water supply and waste water treatment
  • Road transports
  • Biodiversity
  • Identifying environmental aspects and impacts

Day 4: Introduction to Waste Management

• A review of current waste management practices
• The concept of ‘duty of care’ for waste disposal
• Classification of wastes
• Special wastes
• Waste management hierarchy
• Waste disposal options

Day 5: Packaging & Waste Management

An explanation of the role of packaging in modern society and the problems of packaging waste disposal
