Introduction

Management is more an art than a science. More specifically, management is not just a set of behaviors that you apply the same way in all situations. Rather, it is the ability to assess an environment – and its people – and choose the right skills and applications for the specific situation. Part 1 of this programme (5 days) provides a first step in this process of equipping managers with the key skills of management. It supplies organizations with managers who are competent and who foster trust and create an atmosphere of openness and honest information exchange.

Learning Objectives

  • Clearly define and communicate your organization’s business context.
  • Clarify, assess and address your own personal assumptions, biases and values regarding management.
  • Tailor your management approach to others styles and approaches.
  • Master the basic skills of principled, “win-win” management.
  • Learn to deliver effective feedback for both positive behavior and for confronting non-performance.
  • Practice the skills for assessing staff needs and, based on those needs, delivering effective motivational coaching.
  • Understand the nature of a changing environment and learn how to tailor your approach to address this environment.
  • Master the skills of setting a direction and establishing flexible outcomes.
  • Practice the management skills of effective questioning, facilitation and presentation.
  • Learn and apply the basic skills of effective team working.

 Training Methodology

This practical and results-oriented programme is based on adult learning concept. It is structured so that delegates receive a strong element of practical activities and exercises. This helps to reinforce the practical content thus equipping delegates with the knowledge of management to create impact and long lasting results.

 Pre & Post-course assessments will be implemented to measure the effectiveness of this training.

 Program Content

 Day 1 – Direction, Vision and Outcomes

  • Overview the 10 key competencies of management.
  • Identify the requirements of management at various stages in the organisation’s development.
  • Communicate the business context for your organization.
  • Communicate a concrete and actionable corporate and team vision.
  • Understand the need for outcome-based objectives.

 Day 2 – Self Management

  • Understand the relationship between your intended actions and your self talk.
  • Practice the skill of identifying your own “real goals” – i.e. intended actions.
  • Identify the personal and organizational factors that may prevent you from fully achieving your intended goals.
  • Examine and clarify the source of your own values and assumptions, and clarify the effect of these values and assumptions on your leadership style.
  • Distinguish between negative “requiring beliefs” and positive “enabling beliefs.”
  • Practice the skill of transforming requiring beliefs into enabling beliefs as it affects your leadership practices.
  • Take a final personal inventory of your self management strengths and needs.

Day 3 – Managing Individual Differences

  • Recognise and identify the behaviors of assertiveness and responsiveness.
  • Receive feedback on your own social style.
  • Understand the management skills for meeting the style needs of senior management/stakeholders.
  • Practice versatility skills for a variety of people in a variety of business situations.
  • Develop a strategy for dealing with key stakeholders.

 Day 4 – Communication/Advocacy – Questioning, Listening and Presentation Skills

  • Understand the primary communication barriers and needs.
  • Practice the skills and organisational applications of questioning and active listening.
  • Review the elements of trust as they relate to the communication process.
  • Practice the skills advocacy, i.e. presenting and affirming a point of view.
  • Develop the 15 steps of effectiveness in presentations.

Day 5 – Positive Reinforcement and Confronting Non-performance

  • Understand the need for and the function of feedback in management.
  • Experience the impact of effective/ineffective feedback.
  • Distinguish between positive feedback, negative feedback and punishment.
  • Practice a feedback session for positive reinforcement.
  • Understand the need to avoid mixing positive and negative feedback.
  • Practice the ‘change interview’ tool for confronting non-performance.

Day 6 – Team Building

  • Understand the difference between groups of people with common interests and true teams.
  • Practice the skills of jointly developing goals and outcomes for a team.
  • Identify the key style related interpersonal aspects of team interaction.
  • Practice the skills of managing a team.
  • Practice the skills of “positive contention” i.e. constructive disagreement in a team setting.
  • Master the skills for recognition and celebration in a team setting.

 Day 7 – Dealing with Conflict (Addressing/Resolving Interpersonal Issues)

  • Identify and clarify the problems that lie underneath conflicts and emotions.
  • Recognise the basic behaviors for the four interpersonal responses: Confused, Concerned, Demanding and Angry.
  • Practice interacting and dealing with people in these four behavioral modes.
  • Understand the function, behaviors and growing importance of empathy in an organisational setting.
  • Practice the application of the LEAP (Listen Empathise Ask Propose) process.

 Day 8 – Negotiating Skills

  • Identify the basic elements of a problem or situation that need to be resolved.
  • Understand the difference between “positions” and “interests” and their role in the negotiation process.
  • Practice the skill of identifying the interests that underlie specific positions, and how to “move from positions to interests.”
  • Differentiate between Shared, Opposed and Differing interests.
  • Practice the skill of offering options as approaches to varying interests.
  • Identify your back up position in case the negotiation fails.

 Day 9 – Coaching and Mentoring.

  • Identify people in your organisation and where their development needs may fall on the Mentoring / Coaching continuum.
  • Review the skills of empathy and advocacy as they apply to the coaching process.
  • Practice the introductory skills of coaching and receive feedback.
  • Learn the key interaction skills of the coaching process.
  • Practice the full set of coaching skills and receive feedback
  • Develop a learning plan to follow up on a coaching or mentoring session.

 Day 10 – Managing Change and Uncertainty

  • Understand the essential factors and need of an environment characterised by change, uncertainty and stress.
  • Distinguish between the key organisational and interpersonal needs and demands of a changing environment and the need to balance the application of these skills.
  • Review the ‘Growth Curve’ model focusing on the nature and demands of a changing vs a stable environment.
  • Practice the “Context Meeting” skill for communicating context in a changing environment.
  • Practice the skills of setting and re-setting direction in an environment characterised by continually evolving information.
  • Practice the LEAP process from day 7 for dealing with these reactions.
